GRE General Test at home - an online version of the GRE
Online GRE General Test | Take the test at your home

The GRE General Test at home is a Covid-19 response from the ETS. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live in more ways than we can comprehend. Lock down imposed in many countries around the world and the need to adhere to social distancing norms mean that the GRE® test centers in many parts of the world could not function. As we write this blog, around 2 mn people around the world have tested positive for Covid-19 and sadly over 100,000 people have succumbed to it.

As governments and health care professionals are doing their best to fight the pandemic, we are in a situation in which we have very little clarity on when the lock down and curfews will be lifted. Therefore, it could quite a while before test centers will start functioning normally.

In an effort to meet the needs of students who are planning to take the GRE in the coming months, ETS is offering an online version of the GRE General Test. Here are key things that you should know if you are planning to take the online version of the test.

1. From when can you take the GRE at home? In which countries is this option available?

You will be able to take the GRE at home from April 2, 2020. Students around the world except those living in Mainland China and Iran can opt to take the online version of the test.

2. What is the structure of the GRE at home test? What is the fees?

The test structure is the same as the regular version of the GRE test. You will write two AWA essays (Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument), you will attempt two sections of verbal and two sections of quantitative reasoning.

The fees for the test remains unchanged. For test takers in most parts of the world, the fees is USD 205. If you are from a country in which the fees is different, that remains unchanged.

3. Is it a proctored test? If so how will the test be proctored?

Yes! The online version is a proctored test. GRE is taking the services of the organization, ProctorU to proctor all GRE at home tests.

You will be asked to take the test at your home in a quiet room with access to the Internet, a Windows computer with a speaker, a camera, and a microphone. A person from ProctorU will monitor you through the camera, and listen to sounds in your room using the attached microphone. The entire test will also be recorded to ensure that the administration of the test has met security standards akin to what GRE maintains at its test centers.

4. What are the system requirements?

Here is a quick laundry list of what you need to take the test at home.

  1. A desktop or laptop computer running a Windows operating system – Windows 10, 8 or 7.
  2. An internal or external microphone. (Mics as part of wired headsets or wireless earphones not allowed).
