Since this is our TENth blog, we have a special word list in store for you. We have not 5, not 6, but 10 WORDS for you. And the theme?

Well, you guessed it. All of them have the word ‘ten’. Having said that, the words are as ever, important in a GRE Vocab context.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words are Osten<\/strong>tatious, On Ten<\/strong>terhooks, Atten<\/strong>uate, Deten<\/strong>te, Porten<\/strong>tous, Ten<\/strong>et, Absten<\/strong>tion, Inten<\/strong>erate, Ghostwritten<\/strong> and Inadverten<\/strong>t.

We’ve also thrown in an 11th word. Read on to find out what\/why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

i. Ostentatious<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Part of Speech<\/strong> – adjective
Definition <\/strong>– characterized by pretentious or showy display; designed to impress.
Word Origins <\/strong>– from Latin ostentare<\/em>, the verb form of ostendere <\/em>\u2018stretch out to view\u2019.
Synonyms <\/strong>– pretentious, flamboyant, gaudy.
Usage <\/strong>– Her dress was too ostentatious to be worn at such a sombre event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ii. On Tenterhooks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Part of Speech<\/strong> – phrase
Definition<\/strong> – in a state of suspense or agitation because of uncertainty about a future event.
Word Origins <\/strong>– tenterhooks are hooked nails in a device called a tenter.
Synonyms<\/strong> – anxious, nervy, jittery.
Usage <\/strong>– He was on tenterhooks all the way until his GRE Score was declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hook, Line, and Sinker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tenterhooks were wooden frames, used in the process of making woollen cloth. When the cloth was woven, it’d be cleaned of oil, and grease, and had a tendency to shrink. To prevent that, the cloth was stretched out in the open, with hooked nails attached to the ends of the cloth, hammered into frames, called tenters.

Over the years, the feeling of anxiety, waiting for something, came to be associated with feeling like being stretched like the cloth. So, on tenterhooks became a metaphor for nervous excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iii. Ghostwritten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Part of Speech<\/strong> – past participle of the verb \u2018ghostwrite\u2019
Definition <\/strong>– written for, and in the name of another
Word Origins<\/strong> – Old English g\u0101st <\/em>(in the sense \u2018spirit, soul\u2019) + Old English wr\u012btan <\/em>‘score, form (letters) by carving, write\u2019.
Synonyms<\/strong> – surrogated.
Usage <\/strong>– Ten years after publication, it was revealed that the pro athlete\u2019s \u2018autobiography\u2019 was ghostwritten.<\/p>\n<\/div>

iv. D\u00e9tente<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Part of Speech<\/strong> – noun
Definition<\/strong> – the easing of hostility or strained relations, especially between countries.
Word Origins<\/strong> – from French d\u00e9tente<\/em>, \u2018loosening, relaxation\u2019.
Synonyms <\/strong>– de-escalation, rapprochement, reconciliation.
Usage <\/strong>– Citizens of the warring countries regularly pray for a d\u00e9tente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
